Summary:Notwithstanding considerable disagreement that Persisted between the Zionist left and right, the author argues that largescale rescue of Jews through immigration to Palestine was doomed in the 1930's. even a United Zionist movement could not have altered the outcome in view of limited financial resources and mounting british opposition to mass aliya. edelheit investigates the spectrum of zionist responses to the nazi persecution of german jewry and steadily worsening conditions for jews in eastern europe, and concludes that the increasing stress on european jewry forced zionists of all stripes to adopt plans for mass immigration that were ultimately foiled by the british government's refulas to live up to its promises.
